Chic modern wine cellars have become a trend due to their timeless, feminine, and clean look. With functionality as a staple in wine storage units, striking that balance between style and function can feel overwhelming especially when your space has an irregular shape and not originally built for a wine cellar.

Much like this under the stairs modern wine room we’re featuring today, designing and building a proper wine room with a deluxe look is possible when working with the right professionals.

Take a tour of this incredibly stylish wine cellar and explore the minute details that make this old-powder-room-turned-wine-cellar space a truly unique home feature!

The Perfect Cozy-Looking Modern Wine Cellar in 2024!

How to Make Your Modern Wine Cellar Timeless

Modern design is typically defined by streamlined silhouettes, monochromatic color palettes, and solid lines. They are more intentionally inched towards functionality so the colors are more muted and natural. When you reinforce modern design elements with the right lighting strategy, you’ll be able to curate an atmosphere that seamlessly blends with the changing times.

Custom glass doors for modern wine cellars have the quality and durability that can last a lifetime with proper maintenance.

For this modern residential wine cellar, the goal was to give it a similar vibe to the rest of the home. This lovely home had very elegant chic interiors complete with white walls, wooden floors,  wainscotting, and more. It felt like a Pinterest board in real life!

Strategically located between the family room and dining area, this wine cellar under the stairs was curated with a neutral color palette presented in various materials – wood, metal, stone, and glass.

Although most modern design projects showcase minimalist aesthetics, the team decided to put a little more zest into this modern farmhouse wine cellar. Every wall ou’ll see in this wine room has a unique racking display, even the floor and ceiling! Regardless of the different micro designs, everything still came together, making the cellar look very stunning and preserving its timeless character.

The built-in lock and key system works by easily inserting and twisting the key.

Additionally, using traditional wine cellar designs in a relatively compact space can potentially make it feel crowded and outdated. The use of clean lines, surfaces and simple patterns in modern design can help keep the space feel roomier.

Modern Metal-Framed Glass Wine Cellar Door

This custom wine cellar’s contemporary vibe is immediately felt even before someone enters because of its metal-framed glass door. It’s a single glass door that opens outwards and it can be opened by pulling the 24-inch metal handle. The glass is dual paned which means it is made of two glass panels fixed as one with a “spacer” that elevates its insulation efficiency.

The metal wine display that’s fully seen from the outside.

The team further installed a manual lock and key system for security and a robust magnetic lock that ensures that door stays in place when it is closed.

Bringing Classy and Eco-Friendly to Flooring Design

This luxury modern wine cellar boasts numerous unique features from the walls to the ceiling, racking, and floor. The owner wanted to preserve the homey vibe of wooden floors, so the team easily went for natural materials. The rest of the house had dark hardwood floors; to differentiate the wine cellar, the team recommended the use of old wine barrels for flooring.

Used wine barrels can be repurposed by dismantling them, flattening the staves or cooperage, then resurfacing them to give them the look and durability that wine cellar floors need. For this project, the team used wine barrels staves. When you want to add some raw character into a room, repurposed wine barrels are great to use because you can still see the original markings on the planks.

A Fascinating Wine Racking Composition Plan

This old under-the-stairs shower room has five walls. Since the team wanted to provide plenty of storage for the owner, they utilized all five walls and installed racks in them. At the same time, they wanted to balance style and storage capacity, so they combined different racking styles to add personality to the display.

Design trends of modern wine cellars include dedicated spaces for specific wines and spirits. In this photo, you see the owner’s dedicated “Tequila Wall”.

A Dedicated Tequila Wall

Upon going inside this wine room, a large floor-to-ceiling custom wooden wine rack can be seen on the leftmost wall. This is what the clients call their “tequila wall”. As the name suggests, this is where they stock all their tequila for convenience. If you enjoy tasting and collecting different distilled flavors from the blue agave plant, a dedicated storage space like this will be a valuable design choice for your wine cellar.

The individual shelves in this tequila wall are unconventional and were shaped uniquely too. In the middle of the wooden rack, you’ll find a lighted shelf that features a custom acrylic LED panel acrylic LED light panel at the base. This gives the bottles that subtle highlight from the bottom.

Near the perimeter or edges of the rack, the team carved into the wood and created ½ inch-deep channels to make space for the LED ribbon lights. The strip lights enhance the rich color of the wood, without disrupting the general look of the display even when they are turned off.

Wood is a highly versatile design material as it fits both traditional and contemporary spaces. That’s why for this wine cellar, it doesn’t only have one wooden wine rack, but three! Plus, a floating wooden counter for decanting.

The Other Big Wine Wall

Immediately right across the tequila wall is the main wine wall that comes with four reveal rows at the middle, three horizontal dispaly rows at the bottom, crate storage, and vertical shelves for storing wines upright.

Again, each of the shelves on this rack was custom-made into different sizes and shapes to make the display look more interesting.

Customizing this modern wine cellar’s wooden wine racks allowed the team to maximize storage space in an irregularly shaped room.

A Custom Wooden Wine Rack /[Slash] Cooling Unit Cabinet

Cooling unit registers may not always blend in with the overall aesthetic of a wine cellar. In some cases, like this contemporary wine cellar, us designers recommended hiding the cooling units without obstructing the air flow. Grilles are great for this need and the team decided a wooden wine rack, customized with wooden grilles is a practical choice.

You’ll find this rack directly beneath the staircase and it features four rows of horizontal display shelves and a grille at the bottom.

The Decanting Countertop

Between the tequila rack and main wine wall is a floating wooden counter. This is an empty space where the owner can decant their wines conveniently and safely. The height of the counter is around half the total height of the wall. And like the rest of the wooden racks here, this wooden counter was made from quality white ripped oak, later polished with lacquer for a lustrous finish.

Wall-Mounted Metal Wine Racks With a Unique Glow

In front of the glass door is where then metal wine racks are. The team brought in VintageView’s Vino Rails and installed 17 rows of them on a white stone wall. Yes, one wall of this wine cellar was built with beautiful white stones that serve as a backdrop for the metal wine racks.

Two metal posts where mounted via the ceiling and floor, and the metal racks were then arranged into four columns. This metal rack display alone could carry 68 standard-sized wine bottles.

The metal rack was installed a few inches away from the stone wall to make way for LED lights. The team fixed cool-toned LED lights behind the metal posts to again provide that subtle back glow. One can see this beautiful display directly from outside the glass door!

Ceiling Metal Wine Racks: Have You Ever Seen One?

When you’re looking for a feature that’s highly unconventional, you’re going to love this storage idea, nestled directly on the ceiling.

Every inch of this wine cellar was clad in style, and this included the floor and ceiling. While ceilings are typically left out or simply adorned with stylish lights like chandeliers and track lights, the team had another idea in mind. They did some tiling work on the entire ceiling and attached single-bottle racks on the underside of the staircase!

The “Invisible” Modern Wine Cellar Cooling System

A well-designed wine cellar requires a dedicated cooling system to maintain optimal conditions for your collection. After considering various options, we determined that a ductless split-type system was the ideal choice for this space. The limited wall space in the room made it challenging to accommodate a ducted or self-contained system. To address this, we installed the RM4600 wine cellar cooling unit from US Cellars Systems. This system features a condenser connected to the evaporator via a coil, which we discreetly ran to the attic where the condensing unit is located.

You won’t see a single part of the cooling unit inside the cellar because the team hid the evaporator behind custom wooden grilles that make it look like it’s part of the wooden wine rack!

This is one of the most interesting under-the-stairs modern wine cellars we’ve seen. With its distinctive design, innovative and highly creative details, and impeccable craftsmanship, it’s a timeless small modern wine cellar that can go with the changing trends in the industry while providing value to the homeowners.
